About this Position / Responsibilities

NFF is seeking a hands-on Field Technician with strong structured cabling and telecom pathway survey experience, plus the ability to perform wireless RF surveys using tools such as Ekahau, AirMagnet, iBwave (and similar platforms). This role supports client deployments by surveying sites, documenting infrastructure, assisting with install readiness, and validating wireless performance in real-world environments.

Key Responsibilities

Cabling / Telecom Field Work

  • Perform and support installation activities for structured cabling systems (CAT6/6A, fiber, coax as required), including terminations, labeling, and testing.
  • Install and service telecom/network components including patch panels, jacks, racks, ladder rack, J-hooks, conduit interfaces, and grounding/bonding as applicable.
  • Use industry test equipment (e.g., Fluke or equivalent) to certify copper/fiber runs and document results.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity and cabling-related issues in the field and coordinate resolution with remote engineering teams.

Pathway & Site Surveys

  • Conduct pathway surveys to assess cable routes, risers, conduits, ceiling spaces, MPOE/DEMARC access, telecom closets, and rack/stack readiness.
  • Validate site conditions: access, ceiling type, firestopping requirements, cable tray capacity, obstructions, and building restrictions.
  • Create clear deliverables including photos, annotated floor plans, and written survey notes to support design and estimating.

Wireless / RF Surveys

  • Perform wireless site surveys and RF assessments including (as assigned):
  • Predictive surveys (when floor plans and materials are available)
  • AP-on-a-stick / active surveys
  • Validation/post-deployment surveys
  • Spectrum analysis / interference identification
  • Utilize survey tools such as Ekahau, AirMagnet, iBwave, Hamina, or equivalent (as applicable) and provide actionable findings.
  • Capture and report KPIs such as coverage, RSSI, SNR, channel overlap, roaming considerations, and capacity considerations (where required).

 Documentation & Customer Interaction

  • Maintain accurate field documentation: redlines, as-builts, test results, BOM/parts usage, daily reports, and time/expense reporting.
  • Communicate professionally with client stakeholders, facility teams, and general contractors while on-site.
  • Escalate risks (access issues, unsafe conditions, scope gaps) to the PM/lead in a timely manner.

Remote Support

  • Provide deskside support for end-user connectivity issues (wired/wireless), including patching, port activations, basic endpoint/network triage, and coordination with network teams as needed.

Qualifications

 Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in telecom/low-voltage field services (structured cabling, pathway surveys, or related).
  • Demonstrated experience performing cabling and pathway assessments in commercial environments (offices, healthcare, education, warehouse, retail, etc.).
  • Experience conducting RF/wireless surveys using Ekahau, AirMagnet, iBwave, or similar tools.
  • Strong ability to interpret floor plans, telecom drawings, and basic network/wireless requirements.
  • Comfortable working in ceilings, telecom rooms, active business environments, and construction sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally/regionally as needed.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Industry certifications: BICSI, FOA, CWNA/CWSP, manufacturer certs (Cisco/Meraki/Aruba/etc.), or equivalent.
  • Experience with fiber testing (OTDR/light source & power meter), splicing (a plus), and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with wireless design concepts: channel planning, DFS, capacity planning, high-density environments.
  • Experience with ticketing systems, SOW validation, and producing client-ready survey deliverables.
  • Experience with T1 IT support.

Physical / Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, use ladders, and work in tight/overhead spaces.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and perform field work in varying site conditions.
  • Occasional after-hours or weekend work based on project schedules.
